The imparfait (imperfect tense) describes ongoing past states, habits, and background descriptions. Think of it as the "was doing" or "used to" tense.
Formation: take the nous present form, drop -ons, add endings: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. Example: nous parlons → je parlais.
Only ONE verb is irregular in imparfait: être → j’étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient.

The imparfait stem ALWAYS comes from the nous present form (except être). This rule has NO exceptions.
Imparfait = background, habits, feelings. Passé composé = specific completed actions.
Weather in the past uses imparfait: "Il faisait beau" (it was nice), "Il pleuvait" (it was raining).
Pronunciation: -ais, -ait, -aient all sound the same! Only -ions and -iez are different.
