The hardest part of French past tenses: choosing between passé composé and imparfait. The rule: PC = completed action, Imparfait = background/ongoing.
Think of a movie: the imparfait is the scenery (it was sunny, birds were singing) and the passé composé is the action (the hero arrived, he opened the door).
Key pattern: Imparfait + quand + Passé composé: "Je dormais quand le téléphone a sonné" (I was sleeping when the phone rang).

- Formation: nous present stem + -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
- Only exception: être → stem is ét-: j’étais.
- PC = what happened. Imparfait = what was happening.

Background = Imparfait. Action = Passé composé. Think: setting the scene vs. telling what happened.
"Quand" + imparfait = "while." "Quand" + PC = "when (suddenly)."
Feelings, weather, descriptions, habits, age → almost always imparfait.
"Il était une fois..." (Once upon a time...) — fairy tales start with imparfait!
