In France, greetings are essential — you must always say hello before asking a question or starting a conversation. Skipping a greeting is considered very rude.
Bonjour is used during the day, and Bonsoir in the evening. Salut is informal, used with friends.
French has two words for "you": Tu (informal, for friends, family, children) and Vous (formal, for strangers, elders, or plural). When in doubt, always use vous.
To introduce yourself, say Je m’appelle + your name. To ask someone’s name formally: Comment vous appelez-vous ?

Always say "Bonjour" when entering a shop, restaurant, or meeting someone — it’s the #1 politeness rule in France.
When unsure whether to use Tu or Vous, default to Vous. The other person will invite you to use Tu if appropriate.
"Enchanté" (male) / "Enchantée" (female) — the extra -e is for women but they sound the same!
Salut can mean both "hi" and "bye" among friends — context makes it clear.
