Possessive Adjectives

Talking about ownership: My, Your, His, Her.

Fi

Fiche de révision

Possessive adjectives show ownership. Unlike English, they agree with the thing owned, not the owner. So "his house" and "her house" are both sa maison (because maison is feminine).

Singular: mon/ma/mes (my), ton/ta/tes (your), son/sa/ses (his/her). Plural: notre/nos (our), votre/vos (your), leur/leurs (their).

Special rule: before a feminine noun starting with a vowel, use mon/ton/son instead of ma/ta/sa: mon amie (not ma amie).

Astuces

Son/sa/ses means BOTH "his" and "her" — the gender follows the noun, not the person.
Before a feminine noun starting with a vowel: mon/ton/son (for smooth pronunciation). "Mon amie" NOT "ma amie."
Notre (our) and votre (your formal) don’t change for gender — only for number: notre/nos, votre/vos.
Common mistake: "sa" doesn’t mean "her." "Sa maison" = his OR her house.
